HANDS ON HOP-PICKING WITH EMBER
Event: Hops picking for a one-of-a-kind ale
Date: Friday 9 September 2011
Time: 11am – 12:30pm
Location: Stock Farm, Worcestershire
Imagine a beer that’s as fresh as can be, taking only 100 hours to get from the field to your glass. You are invited to join Ember at the birth of its exclusive green hopped ale, at a press day to get hands-on with the hops.
In 2010, Ember became the first pub group to make a green hopped ale available nationwide. Such was the reception from its guests, it will once again be offering a unique green hopped ale across its 134 pubs as one of 12 ales available during its NovEmber Ale Festival.
As standard, beer hops are picked in late August and dried – unavoidable as the majority of hops are imported from abroad. They can then be stored for up to five years before they’re used. In contrast, green hopping sees a return to traditional British brewing, going from the vine to the brewer’s tank in just 24 hours, and to pint glass in just over 100 hours, or five days.
This allows brewers to use the hops as fresh as nature intended – cutting out the hours and miles usually required, and creating a full-bodied ale. Only a small number of brewers use green hops as the process is very technical, and unlike regular ales, the flavours in a green hopped ale cannot be refined a later stage due, so each cask really is a one of a kind.
Ember invites you to Stock Farm in Worcester to be a part of this remarkable process and help create a truly unique ale. The event promises to change perceptions of ale and show that it can be as refined as many wines. You are invited to explore the hop vines and observe the harvesting of the hops and the intricate process involved in brewing a green-hopped ale. What’s more, the brewer will also be on hand to explain the brewing technique and the flavours experienced when using green hops.
