CAMRA launches Edinburgh Pub Walks book

‘Explore Scotland’s capital city, while never straying too far from a decent pint’

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today ensured drinkers visiting or living in Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, can explore its beautiful surrounds without missing out on its historic public houses.

Edinburgh Pub Walks, by CAMRA author Bob Steel, is a lovingly illustrated, practical pocket-sized guide to the most iconic pubs in Edinburgh and the surrounding area, taking in 25 town, country and coastal walks, from the best of the Royal Mile, to the Dunbar Coastal Trail, 25 miles from the centre of the city.

Edinburgh Pub Walks is an indispensible title for both urban explorer and discerning beer drinker alike. Dividing the guide into two manageable sections – ‘Edinburgh Old and New’ and ‘Beyond the Fringe’ – Steel’s trails perfectly capture Scottish heritage, allowing the reader to experience the city using short, simple routes which take in the historic hilltop views and superb architecture of the capital. Highlighted on each route are key cultural attractions, recommended pubs, and access to public transport facilities, with trails intertwined to allow more intrepid walkers to undertake longer routes through Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.

For those interested in the most renowned heritage pubs Edinburgh has to offer, Steel – an author with a lifelong passion for pub architecture – introduces the reader to the most unmissable pubs in the city to take in the nation’s rich pub going history. These include-

-Athletic Arms (Diggers), 1-3 Angle Park Terrace, EH11 2JX – ‘exceptional interior and relatively little altered from a scheme of about 1900.’

-Leslie’s Bar, 45/47 Ratcliffe Terrace, EH9 1SU – ‘A great late Victorian Edinburgh bar, it’s the work of P.L Henderson, probably the most prolific, and arguably one of the best pub architects Scotland has seen’

-Cafe Royal, 19 West Register Street, EH2 2AA – ‘Grade A listed, this mid Victorian pub is surely in terms of the richness of the fittings top of the league of Edinburgh pub interiors.’

-Kenilworth Arms, 152/154 Rose Street, EH2 3JD – ‘Another impressive island-bar pub, it has recently been deservedly upgraded to a Category A listing.’

-Oxford Bar, 8 Young Street, EH2 4JB – ‘The ‘Ox’ is something different – here is a plain, basic and wonderfully intact old drinking shop from the early 19th century with few embellishments; but for all that one of the city’s great pubs.’

Bob Steel, Edinburgh Pub Walks author, said:

‘The late great beer writer Michael Jackson once said there was nowhere he would rather pub crawl than Edinburgh, and in my opinion there isn’t a more attractive city to take an urban walk. The city’s topography and built environment offer continually changing points of interest, and there’s always a good pub close to hand when you need one!’

‘For anyone unfamiliar with this beautiful city, the guide supplements the trails with information about this historic festival city and its origins, complete with an overview of the Scottish real ale industry.

‘Edinburgh Pub Walks contains everything you need to start your expedition around this fantastic city, whether you are a seasoned real ale drinker, a history buff, a lover of beautiful city walks, or a fan of breathtaking pub architecture.’

Edinburg Pub Walks is out now, priced £7.99 for CAMRA members and £9.99 for non-members. The title is available from the CAMRA shop and all good retailers. ISBN: 978-1-85249-274-8

HALL & WOODHOUSE AWARDS NEW BREWERY CONTRACT TO MUSK ENGINEERING

HALL & WOODHOUSE AWARDS NEW BREWERY CONTRACT TO MUSK ENGINEERING

Hall & Woodhouse, the leading regional brewer of premium bottled ales based in Dorset, has awarded the contract for the building of its new brewery plant to British engineering company, Musk Engineering which is based in Burton on Trent, the Midlands town renowned throughout the world for its brewing heritage.

The new 110,000 hectolitre brewhouse is part of Hall & Woodhouse’s £5 million new brewery development programme, creating a new 21st century brewery on its existing Blandford St Mary site.

“We went out to tender to seven global brewhouse fabrication companies,” explains Head Brewer Toby Heasman “and shortlisted to three on a combination of quality of fabrication and competitiveness. I’m delighted that the British bid from Musk was the strongest of all three of the international bids shortlisted, providing the highest quality and most competitive tender. In fact, appointing Musk is rather like rewriting history. The Musk management team, from Managing Director Keith Booth, to brewhouse specialist Roy Wilkinson, were all trained at Robert Morton and Briggs. Robert Morton was instrumental in the build of Hall & Woodhouse’s last brewery in 1899.

“Musk also demonstrated that it had the flexibility within its team to design a brewhouse that exactly meets Hall & Woodhouse’s requirements. For example, Musk is using a higher grade of stainless steel and a specialised design for the copper and whirlpool operation. Also Musk is a large fabrication company with extensive knowledge and expertise outside the brewing industry and it brings a broad and varied expertise to the project. Musk is able to move existing fermentation vessels as well as the installation of pipe work and utilities, so it will act as the principle contractor for the whole plant working alongside Dorset Grain Services which we have appointed for grain handling.”

Commenting on Musk’s appointment Mark Woodhouse, Chairman of Hall & Woodhouse said “We are incredibly pleased to appoint Musk Engineering as our plant contractor. As a brewery we are very proud of our heritage and are therefore delighted that we have been able to appoint a British company to help us secure our long term future in brewing – it’s not every day that we decide to commission a new brewery – in fact our last brewery was commissioned over 100 years ago, and the decisions we are making today are on behalf of future Woodhouse generations.”

Keith Booth, Chairman and Managing Director of Musk Engineering said “Musk Engineering is proud and privileged to be associated with such a quality family brewer as Hall & Woodhouse. We are very much looking forward to working with Hall & Woodhouse and to producing a professional and quality installation using the latest industry technology to meet the brewer’s requirements. On a personal note, I am looking forward to enjoying the first “Badger” to come from the new brewery!”

CAMRA Hails Big Society Support for Community Owned Pubs

CAMRA Hails Big Society Support for Community Owned Pubs

43% of UK adults willing to join efforts to save threatened local pub

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today welcomed the Prime Minister’s endorsement of pubs as local assets and the promise of Government support for communities wishing to save threatened pubs through community ownership. CAMRA’s new polling research shows that 43% of people would be willing to join efforts to save their local favourite pub if it was under threat. Among regular pub goers this figure rises to 63%.

CAMRA has written to the Government seeking assurances that adequate resources will be allocated to provide business, legal and financial advice to communities wishing to save their local pub by running it as a mutual, co-operative or social enterprise.

Jonathan Mail, CAMRA Head of Policy and Public Affairs, said:

‘Pubs provide the vibrant heart of our communities and provide an invaluable meeting place and the centre for countless local activities. The loss of such pubs can be devastating to community spirit and identity and Government has a key role to play in enabling communities to come together to save their local pubs. CAMRA is committed to ensuring the Government back up their vision of a Big Society with practical legal, business and financial advice to ensure the success of community attempts to save local pubs through community ownership.’

CAMRA National Pub Design Awards

CAMRA National Pub Design Awards – in association with English Heritage and the Victorian Society - opens for 2010

Applicants have until Thursday September 30th to enter!

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today re-opened its prestigious Pub Design Awards competition for 2010 in a bid to commend the pioneering design work of the pub industry. The work must have been completed during the year 2009 to be eligible for the 2010 award.

The Pub Design Awards are held in association with English Heritage and the Victorian Society.

The aim of CAMRA’s Pub Design Awards scheme is to encourage high standards of architectural design in the refurbishment and conservation of existing public houses and in the construction of the new. With particular relevance to the present day, the aim of the Pub Design Awards is to stimulate interest and aware in the many diverse factors that contribute to the unique character of the British pub as an institution.

With the 2009 competition results being announced later in the year, CAMRA is taking the initiative to launch the 2010 competition after already receiving some strong nominations for future consideration.

The 2010 Awards will be judged by the regular panel of architects, authors, historians and heritage experts. The Awards welcome entrants from anywhere in the British Isles, with the competition consisting of the following four categories:

1) New Build Pub
This category is for entirely new built pubs. The judges look for a number of details when judging the worth of any new establishment. The pub might reflect pubs of the past but without becoming a mere pastiche of Edwardian, Victorian or even Georgian artifacts. Or it could be completely modern, using materials of the 20th or 21st century.

2) Conversion to Pub Use
This is where an existing building is converted to pub use. Pubs are judged on the taste and restraint used on both the outside and inside of the pub.

3) Refurbished pub
Refurbishment can range from a complete gutting to replace what was crass and in bad taste with something far better to an enhancement of what was originally there. Refurbishment should suit the individual pub and not be an excuse to use uniform furnishings to brand the pub with brewery or pub company's image.

4) CAMRA / English Heritage Conservation award
This award, sponsored by English Heritage, is usually given for work on a pub which conserves what is good in the pub, makes good some of the crass refurbishment efforts of the past and ensures that the fabric of the place will survive for further generations of pub goers and drinkers to enjoy.

Sean Murphy, Chairman of the Pub Design Awards judging panel, said:

‘At a time when many valued community pubs are under threat, it’s fantastic to see the wealth of suggestions we’ve had informally put forward to us in light of opening the 2010 competition today. Now the competition is officially open, we look forward to receiving examples of the best designs in the country where work has taken place during 2009.’

If you own, design, work, live, or merely like the look of your local pub, please do not hesitate to offer recommendations for the 2010 Awards. Application forms can be downloaded from the CAMRA website at www.camra.org.uk/pdaentryform, with entries submitted by email to tony.jerome@camra.org.uk or posted to:

Thornbridge to launch new brewery bar at Great British Beer Festival

CAMRA Great British Beer Festival 2010

Earls Court, London, August 3rd-7th 2010

www.gbbf.org.uk

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is delighted to announce that Thornbridge brewery of Bakewell, Derbyshire will be presenting its own brewery bar for the first time at this year’s Great British Beer Festival, at Earls Court, London. The Festival runs from August 3rd-7th and is CAMRA’s flagship event.

Thornbridge started life as a 10-barrel brewery in 2005, housed at the time in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall. Rapid expansion has since occurred, with a new 30-barrel brewery in a nearby business park complementing the old site.

At the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) 2009, Thornbridge walked away at the Champion Beer of Britain awards with Silver in the Strong Bitter category for its Kipling beer, and a Joint Bronze in the Best Bitter category for its Lord Marples beer. The brewery also experienced success in 2008 with its well-loved Jaipur IPA winning a Gold medal, again in the Strong Bitter category.

Some of the Thornbridge beers available to thirsty Festival goers on cask this year include Jaipur IPA, Kipling, Lord Marples, Hopton, and Craven Silk, a beer made with elderflower.

Well known as an innovative brewery with many industry accolades already to its name, Thornbridge will be a welcome addition to the Festival and Marc Holmes, GBBF organiser said:

‘This will be the first time that consumers see this new brewery bar and CAMRA is really looking forward to welcoming Thornbridge as we know that many of our visitors will really enjoy the splendid real ales from Thornbridge brewery. Alongside other new brewery bars such as the Liberation brewery of Jersey, and with the return of Thwaites Brewery, we are providing a healthy mix of old and new at the Festival this year.’

Alex Buchanan, Thornbridge Marketing Manager, spoke in anticipation of the Festival this year. He said:

‘We are delighted to be at the premier showcase for Craft British Beer and look forward to making our beers available to a new audience.’
